Many people mistakenly believe they never will need nursing home care. Elder law attorney Dennis Toman explains how nursing home care can be necessary and could happen to nearly anyone. It’s better to be prepared than taken by surprise.
Some people do say that they’re never going into a nursing home. My advice though, is that even though you never plan to go into a nursing home, you may need to go into a nursing home.
If a person gets hit by a car, has a stroke, may suffer from Alzheimer’s or dementia, the question of whether they need the additional care is not really up to them. It’s going to be a question of when that happens, you’re going to need that care, and you’ll be needing to get that care in a nursing home.
Now, no one ever has woken up in the morning and said, “Oh boy! Today is the day I get to go into the nursing home!” But, for certain types of care, that’s going to be the place to get it.
You need to have the right plan in place because nursing homes often cost seven to eight thousand dollars a month, and without proper planning, the problem can be that a person will run out of money, find themselves broke, and in a nursing home.
