When you need long-term care outside the home, here are the available to ways to pay for it either out of your own funds, or through government help such as Medicaid and VA aid and attendance.
Generally if a person is not receiving care at home, then they’re going to be receiving care either in assisted living or a nursing home. Now there’re two different types of care and that’s important to understand.
Assisted living can be a very attractive lifestyle; don’t need as much care there, the people there are going to be talkative, you’re going to be able to have activities, there will be outings, the food, it tastes good. It’s a very pleasant lifestyle; people choose to be in assisted living.
However, for a nursing home, not quite as nice. Higher level of care, the food often is not as good; it often doesn’t smell as good, there are not going to be the types of outings available to enjoy either.
In those situations, of course, the type of care is going to be determined by where you need to be.
There are two different types of care, and two different types of Medicaid.
- Medicaid for assisted living in North Carolina has an important difference from Medicaid in nursing home care. First, Medicaid for assisted living is a state program rather than the Federal program of Medicaid. And secondly there is an income cap, so if you’re a dollar over that income limit of $1247.50 a month, you’re not going to be eligible for Medicaid at all in assisted living.
- Medicaid for nursing home care does not have an effective income cap. So generally, your income, if you’re a single person is going to go to the nursing home, but you’ll be able to qualify regardless of your income, unless your income is more than the private pay rate of the nursing home itself.
Beyond Medicaid, of course, you can pay privately, for as long as that lasts.
If you’re a war-time veteran, perhaps you can get some help through the VA program for aided attendance. You can also pay for care with long term care insurance if you have it; although if you don’t have it at that point, it’s too late to get it.
So if you’re looking at where you’re going to be getting your care, you need to determine what type of care is needed and then how are you going to be able to pay for that care with the available resources.
