This calculator estimates the amount North Carolina Medicaid will require a nursing home resident to pay the nursing home each month. This amount often is referred to as the “Patient Monthly Liability” amount or “PML.” Medicaid requires a nursing home resident to pay all of his or her income to the nursing home, except for (a) a small personal needs allowance of $30 per month, (b) an allowance for a spouse or a dependent child living at home, and (c) any health care expenses, such as health insurance premiums.
Generally for a single person, the PML will be all of the person’s monthly income, except for $30 and what is paid to Medicare and for supplemental health care insurance. After Medicaid is approved however, the Medicare premiums no longer must be paid, so the PML will increase.
